How to maintain your softener?

The maintenance of a water softener follows certain steps.

Check the salt level

The salts in the tank regenerate the resin, preserve the pipes and soften the water. In fact, you should start by checking the salt level in the tank to see if it is sufficient. If you can see the water or the bottom of the tank, it would be ideal for adding salt.

Then, it is advisable to clean the entire tank once every 3 to 4 years with salt and the brine regulator in clear water. This will remove salt deposits.

Changing the prefilter cartridge

The prefilter cartridge of the softener should be changed every 6 to 12 months, taking into account your current water system. Indeed, if the cartridge has an ochre color, the change becomes imperative because, in this state, it will not ensure its function anymore. To do this operation, you must :

• Unscrew the air vent located above the prefilter 
• Put a basin under the prefilter 
• Unscrew the bowl of the prefilter and collect the residual water in the basin 
• Put in another cartridge 
• And overhaul the prefilter bowl.

However, you must make sure that the black seals on the bowl are properly positioned in relation to the white seals on the cartridge. Do not allow them to become distorted.

Cleaning the resin

The resin in the softener can be cleaned once a year or after a period of two weeks without using the water in the unit. This cleaning will limit the risks of microbiological proliferation. To do so, you must use bleach, the quantity of which is indicated in the softener’s manual. There are also ready-to-use solutions that you can choose from.

Next, you will have to introduce the dose of disinfectant into the chimney of the brine regulator of the softener. Using your control panel, start a manual regeneration of the resin.

Checking the water hardness

Once you have completed the previous steps, checking the water hardness is advisable to ensure that your unit is working properly. In fact, this control must be done upstream and downstream of the device by using the kits available on sale. During this control, you must take into account variations of more or less 10%. This allows you to adjust the settings.
